Project Brief
A set of illustrations and collages that were printed on a risograph duplicator.
Concept
Risograph printing is a form of printing that has recently become popular with artists and designers due to its vibrant array of colors, bitmapped texture, and relatively low printing cost.
The risograph printing process is similar to screenprinting, in that each color is printed in a single pass. The colors are separated into different files and printed in separate passes. This is different from standard CMYK printing, where all four colors are printed together in a single pass.
Printing in multiple passes can cause errors in registration, leaving the colors slightly misaligned. However, this is part of the charm of risograph printing. The slight variations between each print in a series makes each one unique. It adds a human touch to an otherwise mechanical process. Risograph printing was not designed for fine art prints, but it is because of this that I find risograph art compelling.
